Hanami in Jujutsu Kaisen: The Nature Cursed Spirit Explained
Hanami (花御) is a Special Grade unregistered cursed spirit and one of the four disaster curses allied with Mahito and Kenjaku. They are born from humanity’s fear of terrestrial natural disasters and the destruction of the natural world. They wield Plant Manipulation and possess the most durable body of any disaster curse in the series. They are killed by Gojo during the Shibuya Incident — pressed against a wall by Limitless and destroyed without ceremony.
Gege Akutami confirmed that if the disaster curses were a family, Hanami would be the mother.

Who Is Hanami?
Hanami is the disaster curse group’s most measured and emotionally grounded member — the one who wants humanity eliminated not from hatred of humans specifically but from genuine love of the natural world humanity is destroying.
Their appearance is striking and gender-neutral: a tall humanoid figure with a bark-like texture covering their body, two branches growing from their head like antlers, a large blind eye on their forehead covered by one branch, and another eye on their neck. Their left arm is always wrapped in cloth. They hide the technique in that arm deliberately — they say they never wanted to use it if they could avoid it.
Their motivation is distinct from Jogo’s and Mahito’s. Jogo wants curses to replace humans as the dominant species. Mahito wants to explore what humans really are at a soul level. Hanami wants the natural world to be free of the damage humans cause it. Their goal is environmental rather than ideological in the conventional sense. They cherish forests, plants, and the living world in a way that makes their alliance with the other disaster curses feel more like shared method than shared purpose.
After Jogo loses his head fighting Gojo and his allies retrieve the still-living severed head, Hanami uses it as a football with Mahito and Kenjaku while they wait — Hanami playing goalkeeper. This scene exists in the manga. It is as absurd as it sounds.
What Are Hanami’s Abilities?
Hanami’s defining characteristic is not their technique but their durability — a body described as among the toughest of any cursed spirit in the series, capable of absorbing damage that would kill other Special Grade curses and continuing to fight.
Akutami confirmed in author commentary that the amount of damage Hanami absorbs during the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc — five consecutive Black Flash attacks from Yuji and a direct hit from Playful Cloud on their weak point — would have killed Jogo. Jogo is considered the more offensively powerful of the two. Hanami simply does not go down from damage that would end anyone else.
Plant Manipulation
Hanami generates, manifests, and controls plants including trees, flowers, seeds, and roots at will. In combat they use roots to restrain opponents, trees as battering weapons, and flower-based seeds as cursed projectiles. They can merge with vegetation to move silently through plant-heavy environments, which is how they infiltrate Jujutsu High during the Goodwill Event without triggering the school’s detection barriers — a sorcerer’s presence would be read as a threat, but a cursed spirit moving through roots and plants slips past conventional defences.
Flower Field
Hanami’s left arm is always wrapped in cloth. The technique inside it is a flower bud that, when fed cursed energy, blooms and fires a concentrated blast of cursed energy equivalent to a cannon shot. Hanami never uses this willingly. Their reluctance to deploy it is a consistent character note — it is their most powerful direct attack and the one they hold back as a last resort.
They use it during the fight with Yuji and Todo when the situation becomes genuinely desperate and they need a decisive strike to create separation.
Stealth and Presence Concealment
Hanami’s ability to conceal their presence exceeds any other cursed spirit in the series. Gojo himself acknowledged after the Goodwill Event that their ability to run away was genuinely impressive — a significant compliment from a person who can perceive cursed energy at atomic resolution. Their technique of merging with plant matter and moving through vegetation allows them to approach and retreat in environments where any other Special Grade would be detectable.
What Happens to Hanami in the Story?
Hanami saves Jogo from Gojo in their first appearance, leads the assault on Jujutsu High during the Goodwill Event, fights Yuji and Todo in the arc’s longest sustained battle, survives Hollow Purple, and is killed by Gojo at Shibuya by being pressed against a wall with Limitless.
Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc
Hanami’s role in the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc is the assault on Jujutsu High. A curtain specifically blocking Gojo is deployed outside the school. Hanami infiltrates through vegetation and emerges from the forest. They overpower Toge Inumaki, Maki, and Megumi in sequence before Yuji and Todo arrive.
The fight with Yuji and Todo is the arc’s most sustained combat sequence. Todo’s Boogie Woogie creates positional chaos that Hanami cannot track, and Yuji lands five consecutive Black Flash attacks in the same fight where he first fully understands what Black Flash is. Hanami absorbs all of it and is still standing. Just as they begin to activate their Domain Expansion to end the fight decisively, the curtain breaks and Gojo arrives. Hanami has no choice but to flee.
Gojo pursues and fires Hollow Purple — the convergence of Blue and Red — at Hanami as they run. The blast nearly obliterates the left half of their body. Hanami survives by using forest cover as a shield and is retrieved by Mahito.

Shibuya Incident
Hanami participates in the operation to seal Gojo during the Shibuya Incident alongside Jogo and Choso. Their role is to occupy and pressure Gojo alongside the other curses while the Prison Realm is prepared. Gojo unseals himself from the curtain on the subway tracks and immediately targets Hanami as his first priority.
Gojo uses Limitless to press Hanami against the wall of the underground station, applying force through his technique rather than a named attack or domain. Hanami is the first of the disaster curses to die in the Shibuya arc — destroyed quickly, without the extended combat of the Goodwill Event, demonstrating how completely different Gojo’s engagement with them is once the curtain blocking him is no longer in place.
They appear in the afterlife with Jogo and Dagon after death.
Why Does Hanami Matter?
Hanami matters as the disaster curse who demonstrates that the group’s ideological foundation is not simply nihilism. Jogo burns things. Mahito experiments with souls. Dagon plays in water. Hanami has a reason that maps onto something recognisable — the destruction of the natural world by the species that generates cursed spirits. Their goal is coherent even if their method is not.
They also serve a crucial narrative function across both arcs they appear in. At the Goodwill Event they are the obstacle that forces Yuji to develop Black Flash for the first time. At Shibuya they are the calibration point — the first curse Gojo destroys when freed, which tells the reader immediately how the situation has changed.
