Dagon in Jujutsu Kaisen: The Water Disaster Curse Explained

Dagon (ダゴン) is a Special Grade unregistered cursed spirit and the youngest and most docile member of the disaster curse group. He is born from humanity’s fear of water-based natural disasters, spends most of the pre-Shibuya period as a Cursed Womb attending group meetings and playing mahjong, evolves into his full form during the Shibuya Incident after Hanami’s death triggers the change, and is killed by Toji Fushiguro — a resurrected man with zero cursed energy.

His name is inspired by H.P. Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos. His domain was used by Mahito and others as a recreational swimming area while he was still a Cursed Womb.

Who Is Dagon?

Dagon is the youngest and most emotionally expressive of the disaster curses, a Cursed Womb who spent months attending planning meetings in an octopus-like form before evolving into a Special Grade cursed spirit after his closest companion died.

In his Cursed Womb form he resembles a large octopus-headed creature draped in a white cloth. He is docile, curious, and emotionally present in a way most Cursed Wombs are not. He attends group meetings with Jogo, Hanami, and Mahito, plays mahjong with them, and watches their planning sessions with visible engagement. His domain — even in the Womb stage — was complete enough that Mahito and others used it as a recreational space, playing inside it like a swimming pool during downtime.

His evolution is triggered specifically by Hanami’s death during the Shibuya Incident. The grief converts directly into cursed energy output, completing his evolution from Womb to full Special Grade cursed spirit mid-battle. His personality changes with the evolution — he becomes sharper, more aggressive, and significantly angrier, though he retains the emotional investment in his group that defined him in the Womb stage.

In his evolved form he is a tall humanoid figure with a red and black body, bat-like wings, and a face retaining octopus-adjacent features. He is proud of his new form and bristles at being dismissed as just another cursed spirit. He emphasises that he and his allies chose their names — a point of identity that matters to him.

What Are Dagon’s Abilities?

Dagon’s technique is Disaster Tides, which generates massive quantities of water and controls marine life shikigami — both of which reach their maximum destructive potential inside his Domain Expansion.

Disaster Tides

Disaster Tides generates enormous waves from cursed energy alone and creates aquatic shikigami in vast numbers. In his evolved form Dagon can release tides from a single fingertip — waves large enough to flood building-scale spaces. His shikigami are marine creatures including eel-like sea serpents, piranha swarms, small sharks, and crustaceans. All function as autonomous weapons that attack targets on command or as part of the domain’s sure-hit effect.

He can also use Death Swarm — a targeted release of shikigami against a specific opponent — as a precision attack rather than an area attack. He uses it to blind Naobito to an incoming technique change and forces him to spend energy countering the swarm rather than attacking freely.

Domain Expansion: Horizon of the Captivating Skandha

Dagon’s domain is an open ocean under a bright sky. Inside it he has access to effectively unlimited water and can summon infinite shikigami with the domain’s sure-hit effect attached. Every shikigami summoned inside the domain hits automatically unless countered by an anti-domain technique. The environment also negates most terrain advantages opponents might use to limit his water-based attacks.

The domain can only be used once per extended combat period — if opponents escape after its first use, Dagon cannot immediately cast it again. This limitation becomes the key tactical fact of his Shibuya fight.

He had mastered Domain Expansion even as a Cursed Womb, which is exceptional — most Cursed Wombs have not developed their technique to that level.

What Happens to Dagon in the Story?

Dagon attends pre-Shibuya planning as a Cursed Womb, evolves during Shibuya after Hanami’s death, traps Nanami, Naobito, and Maki in his domain, is outmanoeuvred when Megumi opens a hole in the domain, and is killed by Toji Fushiguro who enters through that hole.

Pre-Shibuya

Dagon appears in group scenes throughout the series’ pre-Shibuya period — attending the restaurant planning meeting where Jogo burns all the customers, playing mahjong with the group, and observing Kenjaku’s briefings. He is consistently the most passive and gentle presence in these scenes.

Shibuya Incident

When Hanami is destroyed by Gojo during Shibuya, Dagon feels the death. The grief triggers his evolution. He fully manifests as a Special Grade cursed spirit mid-battle.

He fights Nanami, Naobito Zenin, and Maki. The fight is competitive until Dagon activates Horizon of the Captivating Skandha, trapping all three inside his ocean domain. Inside the domain he is nearly unkillable — the sure-hit shikigami swarms overwhelm any attempt at a sustained counter. Nanami protects Megumi during Death Swarm by destroying the shikigami directed at him. Naobito loses an arm but survives.

Megumi enters the fight and opens a hole in Dagon’s domain barrier using his own domain — a recognised anti-domain technique that punches through the outer shell. The plan was to escape through the hole. What actually enters through it is Toji Fushiguro, resurrected by Ogami’s Séance Technique.

Dagon underestimates Toji immediately because he has no cursed energy. He summons a single shikigami to deal with him. Toji destroys it without breaking stride. Dagon escalates to multiple stronger shikigami. Toji runs across the water’s surface and tears through every one of them. He takes Maki’s Playful Cloud and uses it to beat Dagon into the ground repeatedly. Dagon tries to flee into the air using his wings. Naobito intercepts him from above and kicks him back down to Toji. Toji sharpens the ends of Playful Cloud and stabs Dagon repeatedly until he is exorcised.

Dagon’s last conscious thought is disbelief that he is losing to a human without cursed energy.

After death Jogo visits Dagon’s dissipating body and mourns him, promising they will meet again when Dagon reincarnates. They reunite in the afterlife alongside Hanami after Jogo’s own death during Shibuya.

Why Does Dagon Matter?

Dagon’s death serves two purposes: it demonstrates Toji Fushiguro’s ceiling for readers who only know him from the Past Arc flashback, and it provides the disaster curse group with its most genuine moment of grief.

Jogo mourning Dagon is the only time Jogo shows care for another person that is not framed as philosophy or strategy. He simply misses his friend and promises to find him again. For a character who spends most of the series burning things and making arguments about why curses are more authentic than humans, this moment of uncomplicated sadness is the most human thing about him.

Dagon also demonstrates the disaster curse group’s relationship dynamic at its clearest. They chose names. They play mahjong. They used each other’s domains as swimming pools. They are not simply forces of destruction. They are a family of sorts, and Dagon was the youngest and gentlest of them.
