Uraume in Jujutsu Kaisen: Sukuna’s Loyal Servant Explained
Uraume (裏梅) is an ancient curse user over a thousand years old, a Heian-era sorcerer who has served Ryomen Sukuna since childhood, and one of the most powerful antagonists in the series. He wields Ice Formation — a technique that generates and controls ice at any scale — and has spent a millennium working toward a single goal: his master’s complete return to the living world.
He joined Sukuna’s service because Sukuna broke his ice box and needed someone to keep his meat cold. Uraume froze the meat. Then cooked it. Sukuna was impressed by the flavour.

Who Is Uraume?
Uraume is the one person in Jujutsu Kaisen who has been with Sukuna from the beginning — the only relationship in the King of Curses’ thousand-year existence that reads as something closer to genuine attachment than utility.
As a child in the Heian Era, Uraume’s Ice Formation activated involuntarily while he slept and froze his parents to death. He woke surrounded by corpses, detached from what had happened. Sukuna found him in the wilderness and recognised something useful in both the technique and the emotional blankness. He took Uraume in. Uraume served him from that point forward.
Their relationship is not a conventional master-servant dynamic. Sukuna trusts Uraume with responsibilities he gives nobody else — overseeing veils, coordinating operations, accompanying Kenjaku during high-level meetings with foreign governments. When Sukuna is defeated in Chapter 268, Uraume kills himself in the afterlife to follow him. Even in death his allegiance holds.
In the modern era Uraume inhabits the body of Shiori Himi, a woman, under a contract with Kenjaku. He is canonically male despite his vessel. He has white chin-length hair with a dark plum-pink streak, dark pink eyes, and an androgynous appearance in monk’s robes. His expression is almost permanently flat.
The one thing that breaks his composure reliably is any insult directed at Sukuna. He attempted to strike Gojo when Gojo made a dismissive comment about Sukuna — a reckless action that the people around him quickly stopped.
What Is Ice Formation?
Ice Formation generates and controls ice at any scale, instantly freezing moisture in the environment and shaping it into weapons, structures, or area-denial tools with a range and destructive capacity among the widest of any technique in the series.
Uraume’s technique works by controlling the moisture already present in the surrounding environment, freezing it instantly and directing the resulting ice with precision. He can freeze opponents at a distance, create massive ice structures, and deploy wide-area attacks that incapacitate or kill multiple targets simultaneously. Frozen humans face a specific problem: their body is locked inside ice and any attempt to move causes their body to shatter along with it.
Frost Calm
Frost Calm releases ultra-low temperature air from Uraume’s palms across a wide area. The cold is intense enough to freeze opponents and surfaces instantly. During the Shibuya Incident, Uraume uses Frost Calm to create ice pillars across the battlefield and incapacitate multiple sorcerers simultaneously, buying time for Kenjaku’s operation to proceed.
Icefall
Icefall drops massive chunks of ice from above the target in a waterfall pattern. The ice is spiked and freezes on contact. It combines area denial with direct crushing damage. The technique’s range and output make it one of the most difficult area attacks in the series to evade without domain or Reverse Cursed Technique protection.
Uraume also has full mastery of Reverse Cursed Technique, allowing him to heal himself and sustain combat through injuries that would stop most opponents. His cursed energy reserves are described as vast — consistent with his thousand-year lifespan and the sheer volume of experience behind his technique.
What Happens to Uraume in the Story?
Uraume operates as a shadow planner across multiple arcs, fights on the front lines during Shibuya and the Shinjuku Showdown, holds off Hakari during the final battle, and dies after Sukuna’s defeat.
Background Operations
Uraume secretly approaches Juzo Kumiya around the time of the Kyoto Goodwill Event and orchestrates the attack on Jujutsu High during the scheduled event. This operation — which sends Hanami and other disaster curses against the students — is partially Uraume’s coordination. He operates as a shadow planner rather than a frontline fighter for much of the early series.
Shibuya Incident
During the Shibuya Incident, Uraume operates alongside Kenjaku and deploys Frost Calm to freeze and incapacitate allied sorcerers attempting to respond to the crisis. He is poisoned when Choso’s Piercing Blood leaves poisonous blood mixed into an earlier attack. The poison affects him significantly enough that his ice shatters and melts, freeing trapped sorcerers. He escapes with Kenjaku before the situation worsens.
Culling Game to Shinjuku Showdown
Uraume assists Sukuna after his transfer into Megumi’s body during the Culling Game, freezing Maki and Yuji during a fight to assist his newly incarnated master. In the final arc, Uraume fights Hakari in what is described as the most intense behind-the-scenes clash of the Shinjuku Showdown. Hakari’s jackpot immortality directly counters Uraume’s overwhelming destructive power — every time Ice Formation lands a killing blow, Hakari’s Reverse Cursed Technique regenerates him instantly. Neither can finish the other conventionally. The fight runs in parallel to the main battle without a decisive outcome shown.
Death
After Sukuna is defeated in Chapter 268, Uraume appears in the afterlife and kills himself to follow Sukuna. His devotion does not end at the boundary of death. In Chapter 271, Sukuna is shown walking away in the afterlife with a young Uraume beside him — the manga’s final image of their relationship restoring it to the moment it began, before a thousand years of war and service accumulated between them.
Why Does Uraume Matter?
Uraume matters as the living proof of the one claim the manga makes about Sukuna that humanises him: that he was capable of something like loyalty in return for loyalty given. Sukuna took in a child surrounded by frozen corpses and kept him for a thousand years. Uraume followed him across every iteration of his existence and killed himself when that existence ended.
The manga does not present this as admirable. It presents it as true — the most sustained relationship in the series, built on food and ice and the recognition of something familiar, outlasting everything else Sukuna destroyed.
