Aoi Todo in Jujutsu Kaisen: The Sorcerer Who Made Yuji His Best Friend Explained

Aoi Todo (東堂葵) is a Grade 1 jujutsu sorcerer, a third-year student at Kyoto Jujutsu High, and the person most responsible for accelerating Yuji Itadori’s development as a fighter. He is massive, eccentric, obsessively groomed, and one of the most tactically intelligent combatants in the series. He also becomes Yuji’s sworn best friend after a single fight, based entirely on their shared taste in women.

Akutami describes him as a highly skilled gorilla. He became a Grade 1 sorcerer while still a student despite coming from a non-sorcerer family. His favourite food is harami — skirt steak.

Who Is Aoi Todo?

Aoi Todo is a Grade 1 sorcerer from a non-sorcerer family who reached the top tier of the jujutsu world through raw ability, tactical intelligence, and sheer refusal to be anything other than exactly who he is.

He is tall, heavily muscular, and has a large scar running down the left side of his face from training with Yuki Tsukumo. He maintains meticulous grooming despite his appearance. He takes hygiene extremely seriously, applying deodorant and ensuring he smells clean before and during combat. His pleasant scent consistently surprises people.

He opens every significant interaction with the same question: “What kind of women do you like?” This is his actual personality test. The answer determines whether he considers someone worth fighting or worth befriending. Most people fail. Yuji answers tall women with big butts. Todo declares them best friends immediately.

His favourite idol is Takada-chan, a tall pop idol. He wears a pendant during combat containing a photo of both Yuji and Takada-chan side by side. During the Shibuya fight Mahito sees the pendant mid-battle and freezes in genuine confusion. The pause creates an opening. The fandom calls the pendant a Special Grade Cursed Object.

What Is Boogie Woogie?

Boogie Woogie is Todo’s innate technique. It swaps the position and orientation of any two things with sufficient cursed energy by clapping his hands — instantly, silently, and with no visual telegraph.

The name comes from an actual African-American music genre from the 1870s associated with dancing and rhythm. The technique fits: it is entirely about positioning, rhythm, and disorientation.

A single clap swaps Todo with a target, or swaps any two targets with each other. He can include objects with cursed energy — demonstrated when he swaps Yuji out for the Special Grade tool Playful Cloud mid-fight, lands the hit, then swaps Yuji back. He can fake a clap without activating the effect, adding a psychological layer that makes opponents unable to respond to either action consistently.

Boogie Woogie does not deal damage directly. It is entirely tactical. Its value scales with how intelligently it is used. Against Hanami during the Kyoto Goodwill Event Arc, Todo and Yuji swap positions so rapidly and unpredictably that Hanami cannot build a consistent defensive response. Yuji lands four consecutive Black Flash attacks as a result.

Weakness and Adaptation

Boogie Woogie requires both hands to clap. During the Shibuya Incident, Mahito nearly transfigures Todo’s left hand with Idle Transfiguration. Todo cuts his own hand off immediately to stop the technique from spreading. The loss removes his ability to activate Boogie Woogie conventionally.

Todo’s response is to attach a vibraslap — a percussion instrument that produces sound when a metal piece strikes a wooden box — to where his hand was. He modifies Boogie Woogie’s activation trigger from a hand clap to the vibraslap sound. This adaptation allows approximately 50 swaps per second. He combines it with a binding vow to extend the technique’s reach. Yuki Tsukumo also taught him Simple Domain, which he uses as a domain countermeasure.

What Happens to Todo in the Story?

Todo arrives at the Kyoto Goodwill Event as an apparent antagonist, immediately befriends Yuji, fights Hanami with him, returns during Shibuya, loses his left hand fighting Mahito to protect Yuji, and participates in the Shinjuku Showdown with a vibraslap attached to his wrist.

Kyoto Goodwill Event

Todo arrives and challenges the Tokyo students. He fights Yuji seriously, pushing him hard, then generates a set of fabricated shared memories mid-fight — an imaginary history where they were always best friends in school together — and shifts completely from trying to kill Yuji to trying to help him grow. The switch is instantaneous and Todo means every word of it.

He then teaches Yuji the concept of Black Flash in real time during combat. He explains cursed energy flow, demonstrates the principle, and coaches Yuji through it while simultaneously fighting Hanami alongside him. Their coordination in that fight produces some of the most tactically creative combat in the early manga.

Shibuya Incident

Todo arrives during the Shibuya crisis to find Yuji in psychological collapse after Nanami’s death and Nobara’s critical injury. He pulls Yuji back from despair through sheer force of personality and immediately engages Mahito alongside him. Their teamwork against Mahito is the most coordinated two-person combat sequence in the arc.

Mahito nearly transfigures Todo’s left hand. Todo amputates it on the spot. He then slaps Mahito’s hand with his remaining good hand — creating one final swap — to put Yuji in position for the decisive Black Flash. He loses the arm. Yuji lands the hit. Mahito flees into Kenjaku’s absorption.

Shinjuku Showdown

Todo returns in the final arc with the vibraslap modification and participates in the allied sorcerers’ assault against Sukuna alongside the rest of the surviving team.

Why Does Todo Matter?

Todo is the character who teaches Yuji to fight at the level the series’ endgame requires. Without the Black Flash training during the Kyoto Event, without the reinforcement during Shibuya, without the partnership in both fights, Yuji’s development as a combat-capable sorcerer takes a different shape. The final battle’s outcome has Todo’s fingerprints on it even when he is not in the room.

He is also the series’ most reliable proof that complete commitment to your own personality — however strange — is more compelling than performed normalcy.
