The Perfect Preparation Arc in Jujutsu Kaisen: Tengen, Maki and the Truth About the Culling Game

The Perfect Preparation Arc is the eighth story arc in Jujutsu Kaisen, covering Chapters 144 to 157. It bridges the gap between Shibuya’s aftermath and the Culling Game’s beginning — delivering the biggest exposition dump in the series while simultaneously running the Zenin Clan massacre in parallel.

What Happens in the Perfect Preparation Arc?
The Perfect Preparation Arc sends Yuji’s group to Master Tengen’s chamber to learn the full truth about Kenjaku’s plan — while Maki Zenin simultaneously activates her full Heavenly Restriction and destroys the Zenin Clan from the inside.

Yuji, Megumi, Yuta, Choso, and their allies reach Master Tengen in the Tombs of the Star Corridor. Tengen reveals everything: Kenjaku’s thousand-year plan, the Culling Game’s true purpose as a forced merger ritual, and the ten colony structure spread across Japan. The group learns that Gojo can be freed — but only through the Angel’s Technique Extinguishment, and only through the Prison Realm’s back gate, which Tengen holds.
Tengen asks two people to stay and guard him. Yuki Tsukumo and Choso volunteer.
The group divides and prepares for the game. Meanwhile, at the Zenin estate, Mai Zenin sacrifices herself — her death granting Maki a body unrestricted by any cursed energy, pushing her physical capability to the level Toji Fushiguro once held. Maki, having lost the one person the clan consistently used against her, proceeds to dismantle the Zenin Clan one by one.
Naoya Zenin sends the Kukuru Unit and the Hei against Maki. Maki kills them all. Naoya fights Maki directly and loses. Maki’s mother stabs Naoya from behind — the exact fate Naoya once said women deserved — and Naoya dies.

What Does This Arc Set Up?
The Tengen exposition sequence answers every major question the manga has been building toward — Kenjaku’s goal, Tengen’s vulnerability, and the specific conditions the group needs to meet to free Gojo. Without this arc, the Culling Game has no clear strategic shape.

Maki’s transformation also completes an arc that started when she left the Zenin Clan as a student. The clan that spent years blocking her path is gone. What remains is a fighter comparable to Toji — the person the Zenin Clan always considered its greatest embarrassment.
Why Is This Arc Underappreciated?
The Perfect Preparation Arc is mostly setup — it does not have the sustained combat of the Goodwill Event or the emotional devastation of Shibuya. But the Zenin massacre sequence is one of the manga’s most cathartic sequences, and Tengen’s revelations are genuinely well-constructed in how they connect threads that have been running since Chapter 65. It does its job cleanly and hands off to the Culling Game with everything in place.
