Misato Kuroi (黒井美里) is a supporting character in the Gojo’s Past Arc and the caretaker of Riko Amanai, the Star Plasma Vessel. She is a jujutsu sorcerer in a limited sense — she can see and sense curses and reinforce her body with cursed energy — but she is primarily a protector and surrogate mother figure rather than a combat sorcerer. She cares for Riko more than any professional obligation requires and the manga makes that clear from the moment she appears.

Who Is Misato Kuroi?

Misato Kuroi is the personal caretaker of Riko Amanai, a role her family has performed across generations for successive Star Plasma Vessels, and the closest thing to a mother Riko has had since her parents died in a car accident when she was four years old.

The Kuroi family’s service to Star Plasma Vessels is inherited rather than chosen. Misato once tried to leave this path — she attended junior college and aimed for an ordinary office job. She returned to the role anyway. Whether that return was duty, love for Riko specifically, or both is not addressed in the manga.

She wears a maid’s uniform consistently — a black dress with a white collared shirt and apron, her long black hair tied into a bun. She is physically fit, practically minded, and fearless when Riko is in danger. She is not a fighter by training but she improvises when she has to.

Riko’s favourite food is pot-au-feu made by Misato. That detail appears in the official fanbook. It says more about their relationship than any description of duty could.

What Happens to Misato in the Story?

Misato accompanies Riko throughout the escort mission in the Gojo’s Past Arc, is kidnapped by the Time Vessel Association and taken to Okinawa as leverage, is rescued by Gojo and Geto, shares a final tearful goodbye with Riko at the Tombs of the Star Corridor, and appears in Gojo’s afterlife alongside Riko in Chapter 236.

The escort mission begins with Misato and Riko already in danger from two separate groups — the curse user organisation Q and the Time Vessel Association, a religious group that considers the merger of Riko and Master Tengen sacrilegious. When a curse user’s clone attacks to locate Riko’s position, Misato fights back using a mop as an improvised weapon, combining basic martial arts with light cursed energy reinforcement. Her style is practical and not designed for real combat. It is enough for the moment.

The Time Vessel Association escalates by kidnapping Misato and taking her to Okinawa as leverage over Riko. Riko’s escorts offer to handle the retrieval themselves. Riko insists on going. Gojo, Geto, and Riko travel to Okinawa and rescue Misato. The group then spends several days in Okinawa at Tengen’s instruction — Riko is to enjoy her remaining time before the merger — and Misato and Riko spend those days on the beach together.

When the group returns to Tokyo Jujutsu High and enters the Tombs of the Star Corridor, Misato and Riko say goodbye. Both are crying. Riko continues into the tomb with Geto. Misato stays behind. She does not see Riko again alive.

Toji Fushiguro kills Riko before the merger can happen. Misato’s response to Riko’s death is not shown directly. Her fate after the arc ends is not confirmed in the main series.

She appears in Gojo’s afterlife scene in Chapter 236, standing with Riko at the airport alongside Nanami, Haibara, and Geto. Her presence there confirms the bond between them extends beyond death in the manga’s afterlife logic.

Why Does Misato Matter?

Misato’s role is to make Riko’s death hurt. The arc could have presented Riko as a narrative concept — the Star Plasma Vessel — and her death as a tragic plot event. Instead Akutami builds a relationship between Riko and Misato that is specific, warm, and clearly mutual, so that when Toji kills Riko the reader understands exactly what was lost and exactly who is left behind.

Misato is also the Gojo’s Past Arc’s clearest civilian perspective — a person who serves the jujutsu world’s institutional requirements without being a sorcerer in any meaningful combat sense, whose loyalty is personal rather than institutional, and whose loss when Riko dies is entirely invisible to the people who made the decisions that led to it.
