Toji Fushiguro in Jujutsu Kaisen: The Sorcerer Killer Explained

Toji Fushiguro (伏黒甚爾) is a former member of the Zenin Clan, a mercenary assassin known as the Sorcerer Killer, and the biological father of Megumi Fushiguro. He carries zero cursed energy — a condition called Heavenly Restriction — and compensates with physical capabilities that exceed every sorcerer of his era. He is the primary antagonist of the Gojo’s Past Arc and the person who nearly kills both Gojo and Geto as students.
He took his wife’s surname deliberately. He wanted nothing to do with the name Zenin.

Who Is Toji Fushiguro?
Toji Fushiguro is a man born into one of the most powerful jujutsu clans with no cursed energy whatsoever, rejected and abused by that clan from childhood, and who became the most dangerous assassin in the jujutsu world specifically because of the condition they despised him for.

The Zenin Clan values cursed techniques above everything. Toji was born without any. As a child the clan locked him in a pit full of cursed spirits as punishment. The scar at the corner of his lip is from that period. Some adult clan members feared his physical strength regardless. Most still considered him worthless.
He left, took his wife’s surname, and built a career killing the kind of people the Zenin Clan produced. He could not exorcise cursed spirits — his lack of cursed energy makes that impossible — so he compensated by becoming the most efficient weapon-wielding human alive.
His wife died shortly after Megumi was born. Toji returned to the person he had been before her.
What Is Heavenly Restriction?
Heavenly Restriction is a condition where a person trades one aspect of their sorcerer potential for extreme enhancement of another. Toji’s version is absolute — zero cursed energy in exchange for physical capabilities beyond any sorcerer alive.

With no cursed energy in his body, Toji is invisible to sorcerers who detect threats through cursed energy residue. He passes through barriers undetected. The Six Eyes cannot read him as a threat because there is nothing to read. He can see and track cursed spirits through his enhanced physical senses alone — something most non-sorcerers cannot do at all.
His strength, speed, and reflexes operate beyond human limits. He is faster than Gojo can track in their first encounter. He defeats both Gojo and Geto separately and leaves them both near death before Gojo’s awakening changes the equation.
He also cannot exorcise cursed spirits without a cursed tool. He fights them and injures them but lacks the cursed energy needed to destroy them. This is the limitation the Zenin Clan used to reject him. He built his entire career around working within it.
The Inventory Curse
Toji’s primary tool is a worm-like cursed spirit that coils around his body and stores his weapons inside itself. He trained it earnestly over time, building a genuine relationship with it. It functions as a mobile weapons arsenal, capable of holding cursed tools of any size. After Toji’s death it was absorbed by Suguru Geto.
Key Weapons
His most significant cursed tool is the Inverted Spear of Heaven, a Special Grade tool whose nullification ability cancels any cursed technique it makes contact with. He uses it on a chain to attack Gojo from range, nullifying Infinity on contact. It is later destroyed by Gojo and passes through several hands before the Shibuya Incident.
What Happens to Toji in the Story?
Toji is contracted to kill Riko Amanai during the Gojo’s Past Arc, defeats Gojo in their first fight, is killed by Hollow Purple in their rematch, and is briefly resurrected during the Shibuya Incident where he fights his own son before choosing to die.

Gojo’s Past Arc
The Time Vessel Association contracts Toji to kill Riko Amanai, the Star Plasma Vessel. Toji creates a public bounty on Riko specifically to tire out Gojo and Geto — he knows they will spend resources defending against other bounty hunters before he makes his move. He defeats Gojo in direct combat by using the Inverted Spear of Heaven to nullify Infinity. He defeats Geto through sheer physical force.
He kills Riko. Gojo, near death, works through Reverse Cursed Technique alone and reaches the ceiling of his ability. Gojo finds him. The rematch lasts seconds. Hollow Purple destroys the left side of Toji’s body.
As he dies, Gojo asks if he has any last words. Toji thinks of his wife and Megumi. He tells Gojo that his son will be sold to the Zenin Clan in two or three years. He tells Gojo to do whatever he wants with the information. He dies standing.
That information is what leads Gojo to find Megumi, remove him from the Zenin Clan’s reach, and enroll him at Jujutsu High. Toji’s final act saves his son’s life without ever admitting the relationship.
Read this arc from Chapter 65 through Chapter 79.
Shibuya Incident
Ogami, a curse user with a Séance Technique, resurrects Toji during the Shibuya Incident using her grandson’s body. The resurrection brings back Toji’s soul but without his memories or reasoning — only his instincts and physical capability remain. He immediately kills Ogami herself.
He tears through the Shibuya tunnels destroying everything in his path. He defeats Dagon, the Special Grade disaster curse, using Playful Cloud. He then encounters Megumi. They fight. Toji begins to regain fragments of consciousness. He asks Megumi his surname. Megumi answers: Fushiguro.
Toji stabs himself in the head on the spot.
He never reveals to Megumi who he is. He protects his son the only way he can in that state — by removing himself before he causes further harm. Megumi does not understand what just happened.
What Does Toji Represent?
Toji is the clearest proof in the manga that the jujutsu world’s value system is built on a lie. The institution that rejected him for having no cursed energy produced the person who came closest to killing its two greatest sorcerers. His existence is the argument against everything the Zenin Clan stands for.

His relationship with Megumi — indirect, indirect even in death, never spoken aloud — is the series’ quietest love story. He could not be a father. He managed to protect his son anyway, twice, across two lifetimes.
