Gojo’s Past Arc in Jujutsu Kaisen: The Hidden Inventory and the Breaking of Two Friends
Gojo’s Past Arc (五条過去編) is the fifth story arc in Jujutsu Kaisen, covering Chapters 65 to 79. Told almost entirely in flashback, it follows a teenage Satoru Gojo and Suguru Geto during their second year at Jujutsu High — a mission to protect Riko Amanai, the Star Plasma Vessel, from two groups trying to prevent her from merging with Master Tengen. It is the arc that explains everything about who Gojo and Geto became.

What Happens in Gojo’s Past Arc?
Gojo’s Past Arc follows teenage Gojo and Geto as they escort Riko Amanai — a girl destined to merge with Tengen — while the assassin Toji Fushiguro hunts her on behalf of a religious organisation that considers the merger an abomination.
Riko Amanai is the Star Plasma Vessel — a girl whose merger with Master Tengen would reset Tengen’s immortality technique and prevent Tengen from evolving beyond human consciousness. Two factions want to stop the merger: Q, a curse user organisation that wants Tengen to lose control, and the Time Vessel Association — a religious group that worships Tengen as a god and considers human merger sacrilegious.
Toji Fushiguro — Megumi’s father — is contracted by the Time Vessel Association to kill Riko. Toji carries no cursed energy whatsoever, the result of a Heavenly Restriction that stripped his energy in exchange for physical ability beyond any sorcerer. Gojo’s Six Eyes cannot read him. His conventional strength means nothing in this fight.
Toji defeats Gojo in direct combat. The loss is total. Gojo, near death, works through the mechanics of Reverse Cursed Technique alone — positive cursed energy generated by multiplying negative cursed energy — and heals himself. The Six Eyes, freed from their previous limitations, reach full activation. Gojo returns.
The rematch is not a fight. Toji cannot touch him.
But Riko is already dead. Toji killed her before Gojo revived. The mission failed. The Time Vessel Association celebrates publicly. Geto, watching them applaud the death of a teenage girl, breaks.
Geto asks Gojo a question that becomes the arc’s central line: what is the most humane way to exterminate the non-sorcerers? Gojo deflects. They part ways. Geto leaves the jujutsu world. The next time they meet, Geto is the enemy.

What Does This Arc Set Up?
Everything. Gojo’s Six Eyes reaching full potential in this arc explains why present-day Gojo is the strongest sorcerer alive. Toji’s existence explains Megumi’s background and why Gojo is invested in his development. Yuki Tsukumo’s brief conversation with Geto about eliminating curses at the root plants the idea that Geto eventually weaponises into ideology.
The Tengen merger failing is also why Master Tengen evolves into the non-human form seen during the Culling Game. The consequences of this arc are still unfolding chapters later.
Why Is This Arc So Important?
Gojo’s Past Arc is the emotional core of the entire manga. It explains the series’ two most important relationships — Gojo and Geto’s friendship, and Geto’s ideological fall — and makes both feel inevitable rather than contrived. Geto does not become a villain because he is evil. He becomes a villain because he watched something terrible happen and could not make it mean anything within the system he was part of.
The arc also contains the manga’s most technically interesting fight sequence: Gojo working through the mathematics of Reverse Cursed Technique alone while dying, reaching a conclusion that rewrites his ceiling.
