Who Is Naoya Zenin?
Naoya Zenin is the youngest son of Naobito Zenin and self-declared heir to the Zenin Clan — a Special Grade 1 sorcerer who pairs elite combat speed with the most reprehensible personality in the manga.
Naoya leads the Hei, the Zenin Clan’s most powerful sorcerer unit. The Zenin Clan is one of the Big Three jujutsu families in the jujutsu sorcerer world.
Gege Akutami built Naoya to show what elite talent looks like when raised inside a system that treats power as the only measure of human worth.

What Is Naoya Zenin’s Personality?
Naoya Zenin is openly misogynistic, narcissistic, and sociopathic — the Zenin Clan’s toxic values taken to their most extreme form.
- Shows zero grief for dying father Naobito — treats his death purely as a power vacancy
- Bullies Maki and Mai Zenin throughout their time in the clan
- Tells Maki and Mai’s mother that a woman who cannot walk three paces behind a man deserves to be stabbed in the back
- Hates his older brothers for being older without being stronger
- Receives zero stars from his own Hei members in internal clan reviews — they call him “poop scum”
The one exception is Toji Fushiguro. A young Naoya visited Toji expecting to mock his lack of cursed energy and immediately developed genuine respect after seeing Toji’s raw physical power. Toji remains the only person Naoya ever truly admires.
What Is Naoya Zenin’s Cursed Technique?
Naoya Zenin uses Projection Sorcery — an inherited technique that divides one second into 24 frames and lets Naoya pre-programme his movements within that window, producing speed most opponents cannot react to.

- Naoya plans movements across 24 frames before executing, chaining actions faster than opponents can track
- Any opponent Naoya touches with his palm must move in frame-consistent patterns for one second — failure freezes them inside an animated frame
- Naoya actively seeks to push beyond 24 frames, suggesting the technique has an unreached upper ceiling
- In cursed spirit form, Naoya can freeze air itself across several metres and detonate those frames explosively
- Core weakness: arrogance causes Naoya to consistently underestimate opponents who rely on raw physical strength
What Happens to Naoya Zenin in the Story?
Naoya Zenin’s story runs across three distinct phases — post-Shibuya scheming, defeat during the Zenin Clan Massacre, and a final return as a vengeful cursed spirit.
Post-Shibuya Scheming
After Naobito dies during the Shibuya Incident, Naoya expects to inherit clan leadership. Naobito’s will names Megumi Fushiguro as successor instead, citing the Ten Shadows Technique as superior to Projection Sorcery.
Naoya heads to Shibuya and attacks Yuji Itadori and Choso to draw out Megumi. Choso eventually poisons Naoya using Supernova, forcing Naoya to accept healing from Yuta Okkotsu in exchange for reporting Yuji’s death to the higher-ups.
Read this sequence in Chapter 137 onwards.
Zenin Clan Massacre
Maki returns to the Zenin estate following Mai’s death. Naoya greets her with insults — mocking her burned face, her loss of cursed energy, and her association with Yuta and Megumi.
Mai’s sacrifice removes the final limiter on Maki’s Heavenly Restriction, bringing her physical ability to the level of Toji Fushiguro. Naoya sends the Kukuru Unit after Maki. Maki kills them all.
Naoya fights Maki directly and loses. As Naoya falls, Maki’s mother stabs him from behind — the exact fate Naoya once said women deserved.
Read the full massacre sequence starting at Chapter 148.
Return as a Cursed Spirit
Naoya’s hatred is strong enough to reincarnate him as a vengeful cursed spirit. Cursed energy in Jujutsu Kaisen is generated by negative emotion — Naoya’s transformation is narratively precise.
In spirit form Naoya develops a Domain Expansion he never achieved as a human. Maki and Noritoshi Kamo confront and exorcise Naoya together. His last words, as in life, are insults.
What Are Naoya Zenin’s Key Relationships?
Naoya Zenin’s relationships are defined almost entirely by contempt, dominance, and rivalry.

Naoya and Maki Zenin Naoya bullies Maki from childhood. The Zenin Clan’s value system sanctions his behaviour openly. Maki kills him twice. Their dynamic is the clearest illustration in the manga of how the Zenin Clan’s hierarchy destroys itself from within. Read more about the main characters of Jujutsu Kaisen and how Maki fits into the broader cast.
Naoya and Naobito Zenin Naoya views his father purely as a position to inherit. Naobito’s death produces no grief — only calculation.
Naoya and Toji Fushiguro The only person Naoya genuinely respects. Toji operates completely outside cursed energy — the exact trait Naoya uses to dismiss everyone — yet Toji’s raw strength forces Naoya to update his worldview, at least selectively.
Naoya and Megumi Fushiguro Megumi inherits the Ten Shadows Technique and is named clan head over Naoya. Naoya never confronts Megumi directly, moving against him through proxies — telling in itself.
What Does Naoya Zenin Represent in the Story?
Naoya Zenin is the Zenin Clan’s values taken to their logical extreme — a character whose defeat makes the cost of that system impossible to ignore.
The Zenin Clan dismisses members without strong cursed energy as worthless. Naoya grows up as the system’s prime beneficiary and becomes its most committed enforcer.
Maki defeats him using the exact physical ability the Zenin system dismissed as worthless. Naoya’s reincarnation as a cursed spirit completes the arc — he literally becomes the thing jujutsu sorcerers exist to destroy.
For context on how death shapes Jujutsu Kaisen thematically, Naoya’s arc is one of the manga’s clearest examples.
